InformationExceptionally Cane With Capstan Whale Ivory Grip with Whalebone Shaft with Unusually Long Cage With Twisted Inset, American, Mid-19th Century. The capstan shaped grip has eight facets around the perimeter, and the top is also faceted with a pair of scribe lines at the base. Below the grip are 2 sections of eight-sided ivory with 2 baleen spacers at the grip and a singe spacer above the whalebone shaft. The top of the shaft has a square section with inlaid wood diamond and dot inlays. There is a tapered bone cage that extends down and tapers which measures 14 ½ inches. The 4 cage posts taper from top to bottom and there is a finely carved rope twist column that was inserted in the center of the cage that runs the full length of the cage. Below the cage is another square block with matching inlay to the top block. Below the cage is a 7-inch tapering rope carved pattern and that shaft is round and smooth to the end. This very fine example of a carved scrimshaw cane has one of the longest and skillfully crafted of all the scrimshaw canes we have examined. (SC1353)
