Whale Ivory and Whalebone Carved Cane with Carved Cage and Shaft, American, Mid 19th century
InformationWhale ivory and whalebone cane with a whale ivory capstan shaped grip, American, mid 19th century. The octagonal flat grip joins an eight-sided section which then widens into two square blocks, each with an ebony diamond on each surface with a smaller silver inlay inside. Each corner of each square has an inlaid baleen small circular dot. The remainder of the whalebone shaft forms a single tapered section. The top section of the shaft has an open four sided cage with a rope turned dowel insert, ending with a smaller dot inlaid square. The next section is fluted, continuing to reeded and thirdly to a rope carving. These sections are divided by raised bands that have multiple score lines around the perimeters. The last section is smooth. (WS0274)
Condition: There are a few typical age cracks in the ivory grip, otherwise excellent.
