Oil on Masonite signed lower right R. Cahoon American circa 1965. This whimsical painting painting has captured all the best of the artist themes and elements. There at two sailing vessels with American fags near the horizon. A light house is featured on a spit of land to the left. Hovering to the right is a hot air balloon an element found in many of Cahoon's finest paintings.
Standing on the beach and featured prominently is a sailor embracing a mermaid wearing pearls. To the right on the beach is a large anchor and on the far right is a standing colorfully dressed woman with fancy bonnet leaning on a tree looking upset as she views the sailor and mermaid enraptured with one another. At the center of the painting is a cat boat resembling a Beetle Cat under sail flying the American flag. There are three boys in the boat, two wearing top hats and one with a fishing line off the stern. The boats name "ROSE" is written on the boats transom near the rudder. The colors in the painting are vivid and very bright. This some what complex composition shows many of the best elements that signify Cahoon's best work. (PA1071)
