"Antonio Jacobsen (Danish-American, 1850-1921),
Portrait on board, of the Black Ball Line ship 'Isaac Webb', signed lower right "Antonio Jacobsen" circa 1915. The ship is sailing under full sale and she is flying from the peak of the mainsail the Black Ball Line House flag or the owners the Black Ball Line. She is flying the American flag of the gaff near the stern. It was standard for the ship's of the Black Ball Line to have a large black ball painted on the the second sail up on the fore mast. The bow of the ship has a yellow painted billet head and trial board. Just back from the bow is a quarter board bearing the vessel's name "Isaac Webb".
The painting has a bright blue sky with puffy whit clouds and greenish blue water. (PA1073)

The 'Isaac Webb' was built by William H. Webb (1816-1899), a noted New York designer and shipbuilder. In 1851 Webb designed and built the ship Isaac Webb for the Black Ball Line. The vessel was in service until 1880. Founded by a group of New York Quakers, the Black Ball Line built sturdy and fast packet ships to transport passengers and cargo across the Atlantic.
