Luminous Seascape With Yachts by Warren Sheppard
InformationSheppard, Warren W. (American 1858-1937) Oil on canvas, depicting a sunset off the New England coast (probably the Connecticut shore off Long Island Sound), signed lower left: "Warren Sheppard", circa 1900. At the center of the painting, there is a spit of land which is possibly an island but probably a peninsula. To the right of the land is a large mansion, to the left a barn and to the far left an outbuilding - clearly, a wonderful estate. The water is very calm. Left of center is what looks like a Herreshoff launch with two figures. Beyond the launch is a white hull yawl with her mizzen sail raised and a small dory trailing behind. There is a second blue hull yawl with a raised mizzen. Both yachts have a few figures aboard. The painting has a wonderful calm and tranquil spirit. (PA-545)
