InformationEXTREMELY FINE AND IMPORTANT ENCASED WOODEN SHIP MODEL OF THE FAMOUS CLIPPER SHIP DREADNAUGHT, American, 19th Century, fully rigged with excellent detail, interior of pilot house bears paper label of the maker stating: 'made by Olaf A. Ness, Maverick St., East Boston, Mass., USA'. Original mahogany case rest on contemporary custom-made mahogany stand.
Case and Stand Dimensions: Height 62 1/2 inches; Length 52 1/4 inches; Depth 18 1/2 inches.
Model Dimensions: Height 34 3/4 inches; Length 47 1/2 inches; Width 16 3/4 inches.
NOTE: The clipper ship, the Dreadnaught, was built by Currier & Townsend at Newburyport, MA., 1853. In December, 1854, the Dreadnaught made a celebrated passage from New York to Liverpool in 13 days and eleven hours.
Provenance: The model was deaccessioned by the new Bedford Whaling Museum and sold at the Richard Bourne Auction circa 1980.
