InformationSixth plate daguerreotype depicting a seated well dressed young gentleman wearing a sailor’s hat and smoking a cigar American circa 1850. In his hand he is holding a long implement with a wood shaft and a long-pointed metal end section. It is possible that this tool is a whaling implement. The gentleman has his arm around his dog’s neck, and his hand is below the dog’s ear. The image is quite crisp and this is a fine and interesting image. The dag retains its original mat and leather case. Condition: The daguerreotype is in excellent condition and the case besides a few minor scoffs is also in good condition. Dimensions of Case: Height 3 ¼ Inches, Width 3 ¼ Inches Note: The subject is holding an early Nantucket socketless lance. This example is in the Hellman Collection REH201 at the NHA. The lance shown in the photo was probably a momento kept by the whaleman pictured. The Lance probably lost most of its tip in an engagement with a whale. One can see that the shaft is irregularly shaped as the shafts of whaling implement were.
