Cased 1/6 Plate Daguerreotype Of a Seated Sailor with Whaleship with Whale Boat painted Background, American circa 1850
InformationFine sixth plate daguerreotype depicting a seated well-dressed gentleman with beard and no moustache. He is seated in front of a painted background which features a ship with false gunports. One whaleboat is shown hanging on the side of the ship and there is a whaleboat in the water with a compliment of sex men. The dag retains its original leather case.
Note: It is likely that this photograph was taken in New Bedford where there would be a large enough call for a whaleship painted background. It is also likely that the sitter was a whaleman.
Condition: The daguerreotype is in excellent condition and the case is also in fine shape.
