Gilt and painted zinc eagle with patriotic theme, American, circa 1880. The eagle is hollow and has a very dramatic form. The eagle's head is very realistic and has a proud appearance and is turned to the right. The eagle's wings are up and outstretched. The eagle has well articulated talons, each talon clutching a ball-like base. The talons are pierced to allow an arrow to pass through each talon. The eagle's tail is resting on a gilt heart shaped bracket which attaches to the sculptured backplate. Draped from the eagle's right talon is a green and red painted holly branch. The backplate has a wonderful display of patriotic symbols. Slightly above the eagle is an American shield with gold stars. Flanking the shield left and right is a pair of American flags with gilt spade finials and gilt rope with tassels. Mounted on a rod above the flags and centered between them is a red painted and gilt decorated Liberty cap. Below the flags is a left and right mounted cannon. Below the eagle bracket mount is a silvered leaf above a gilt five pointed star. (FA-597)
