Reference: As noted in Harold Sniffen's Antonio Jacobsen – The Checklist, Paintings and Sketches by Antonio N.G. Jacobsen, 1850-1921 (pp. 70-71), the screw steamship City of Macon was built by John Roach & Son of Chester, Pennsylvania. It was owned by Ocean S.S. Co. and based in Savannah, Georgia. Jacobsen painted and sketched three versions of this vessel between 1878 and 1888. Page 71 indicates that the Mariners Museum has a sketch of this vessel dated 1878. The New Bedford Whaling Museum and the Mariners Museum each have an oil dated 1888. The painting listed above was not known at the time of the book and has been in private hands. (PA-1021)
Dimensions: 22 x 36 in.
Condition: Painting has been relined and there is some minor inpainting along edges due to frame abrasion. The painting is in excellent condition and has vibrant color and crispness.
