Fine carved and gilded American Eagle with ring in his mouth, American circa 1885. This eagle as carved by a gifted carver who has fashioned this eagle in excellent detail. The head is very detailed with a high brow, beak and eye. The neck projects out making for a dramatic look. The inside feathers are carved very deep, and the outer feathers are longer and very realistic looking. The neck and body also have deep carved feathers. The tail sweeps to the right and the feathers are like the end of the wing feathers. The eagle’s talons are very pronounced and dramatic. The back of the eagle shows the natural wood and has a deep carved cavity which shows all the chisel marks and has an old metal ring at the center. The eagle’s gold finish was very well executed with several burnished and polished points.
Condition: The eagle is in excellent condition and the gold leaf surface has a wonderful rich patina. There are a few tiny, scattered spots of gilt loss.
