Fine and rare whale bone and Metal wire small scrimshaw small bird cage, American third quarter 19th century. The whalebone is rectangular in shape and the front section is divided into three panels. The center section has a door with pierced decoration including kissing birds above their hart. The door has a wire that has a twisted spiral end that locks the door shut. The opposite two panels have three vertical wires.  The two sides have vertical wires divided just above the middle with a horizontal bone section that mortises into the legs. The back panel has vertical wires like the side panels with the same type of whale bone horizontal bone panel. At each corner on the top are finely turned and scribed finals and at the center of the top is a nicely formed swing handle. Both the top and bottom of the cage has a center whalebone support with wire running the entire length of the panel. There is a round whalebone bar that fits into the wire on the opposite end which is a perch for the bird. (SC1308)
Condition: The bird cage is in excellent condition condition and has a warm age patina.
