Carved and painted full body sculpture of a detailed North Atlantic “Right Whale” by an unknown carver last half 20th century. The carving is anatomically just above the back of the mouth is a rarely seen and distinctive glass eye. The carving features a large head with the partially open mouth showing the white painted baleen. Back from the eye are raised fins on each side of the whale tucked in close to the body. The whale is the thickest at the center and has several raised ridges running down the back of the whale. His body tapers towards his large and finely formed fluke.
Condition: The carving is in excellent condition. The painted surface is intact with no losses. The whale sits on a professionally made metal base. (FA1170)
Note: This is one of the finest examples of a full bodied full body whale we have examined.
Dimensions: Height with Base 7” Height without base 5”, Length 15 ½”
Note: By the early 1890s, commercial whalers had hunted North Atlantic right whales to the brink of extinction. (They got their name from being the "right" whales to hunt because they floated when they were killed.) Whaling is no longer a threat, but they have never recovered to pre-whaling numbers, and human interactions still present the greatest danger to this species.
