We have maintained a large and varied scrimshaw collection of 19th Century American and English examples. Our pictorial scrimshaw collection includes several examples by identified scrimshanders and other anonymous examples. We have many teeth by know scrimshanders such as Edward Myrick, Edward Burdett, Bank Note Engraver, and the Alboro Brothers. Utilitarian scrimshaw is well represented in the collection. There are several examples of pie crimpers, seam rubbers, swifts, inlaid boxes, fid’s and bodkins. Our book “Wandering Whaleman and Their Art: Masterpieces of American Scrimshaw” has become a popular reference book on the American folk-art medium of scrimshaw.
