Oval Nantucket basket with ivory Top with Polychrome Scrimshaw Nantucket Harbor Scene
InformationNantucket Lightship Basket signed and dated "Michael Kane Nantucket 1988" at the bottom of the base. The basket has Michael Cane’s famous micro weave with oak rims and oak stays. There is an oak swing handle with ivory escutcheons carved in the shape of scallop shells. There is a typical ivory fid closure at the front. The basket has Michael Cane’s famous micro weave with oak rims and oak stays. There is an oak swing handle with ivory escutcheons carved in the shape of scallop shells. The front of the basket has a typical ivory fid closure at the front. The ivory top which is signed along the edge of the bottom right corner "Dorothy Viera" has a scrimshaw polychrome engraving with a view of Nantucket Harbor and the town behind. Brant Point Lighthouse is visible along with several buildings on shore with a bicycle leaning on a rail fence surrounded with flowers. The scrimshaw top is signed along the border in the lower right. The ivory top on the inside has a beautiful, detailed view of an open Nantucket basket filled with colorful flowers. Typical of Michael Kane baskets is an inlaid penny at the center of the inside of the wood base that is dated 1988 the same date as the basket is signed on the bottom of the base.
Condition: The basket has a mellow patina and is in excellent condition. There is some typical age cracking around the edges of the ivory top.
