Oil on panel, depicting a War of 1812 naval engagement between an American and British ship. The American ship is shown on a starboard profile flying an American flag.  The angle of the English ship is bow on facing the viewer.  The port side guns of the English ship and the rear facing guns of the American ship are firing causing a large billow of smoke.  To the left of the horizon, one sees a burning ship indicating that this engagement is part of a larger battle.  The draftsmanship of the vessels along with the coloration of the sea and sky is typical of the work of Thomas Whitcomb. Thomas Whitcomb at this time period was one of the leading artist in the world specializing in naval engagements. (PA-716)
