Ebony and brass octant, signed W. Weichert Cardiff, circa 1850. The octant has an ebony frame. The cross piece has an original ivory maker's label. The instrument has an inlaid ivory vernier scale 0 to 110 degrees. The instrument retains its original color filters, index mirror, telescope and brass feet. The instrument retains its original mahogany pie-shaped box which retains the original trade label of J. Gaupp & Co., number 54 & 56 Queens Road, Hong Kong. The instrument belonged to a Captain Kahlbe of the steamship Pekaso. Note: Navigation instruments of this form are extremely rare with a Hong Kong or Chinese labels. (I-821)
